Let's All Read

A Newsletter from the Reading Department Arlington Public Schools

We believe that reading is a basic building block for learning. We believe that proficiency in reading needs to be attained early in the lives of our students.

We continue to work to achieve proficiency for all students by the end of the third grade, to understand why that has not occurred, and to plan appropriate reading intervention for those students. Reading intervention is provided to all K - 5 students identified as needing reading support based on district and state assessments. Our district model for reading intervention is to provide additional direct reading instruction to students in need, and to support all classroom teachers with information on current reading practices and methodology. The reading intervention staff consists of reading teachers, Special Education staff, and reading coaches working collaboratively with classroom teachers to deliver reading support.

Wilson Fundations is the district-wide core phonics program for grades K - 2. Students receiving reading intervention in grades K - 2 will receive a “double dose” of the phonics concepts taught in class, as well as additional guided reading sessions.

We look forward to another year of improving communication with staff and parents through our new Bishop Reading website. If you have any questions related to reading, please e-mail one of the reading teachers on the Home Page.

The Three Tier Reading Intervention Model is a research-based service delivery model designed to deliver reading services to K - 5 students. It utilizes the skills and training of classroom teachers, reading teachers, reading coaches, and special education staff for reading instruction.

Tier I reading instruction is the comprehensive literacy program each student receives in the regular classroom setting. In this setting, classroom teachers provide supplemental, targeted support to students who are struggling to master the concepts and skills taught at that grade level.

Tier II is an intervention level of service for students who have been identified as needing additional reading support based on district and state assessments. Students in grades K - 5 will receive an additional 30 minutes of support two to five times a week depending on their needs. Support services will be provided by the classroom teacher, reading teachers, reading coaches, or the special education staff. Staff/student ration is 1:5.

Tier II.5 is a more intensive level of support for students who have participated in at least one year of reading intervention and have made limited reading progress. The program for these students will include 30 minutes of support five times a week and will typically have a lower staff/student ratio than Tier II intervention.

Tier III is the most intensive level of intervention for students who are performing at least one year below grade level expectations and have already received Tier II or another similar level of comprehensive instruction and intervention without showing sufficient progress in reading achievement. This level of intervention occurs three to four times a week for 60 minutes in addition to direct classroom reading instruction. Students will receive daily instruction in Wilson, Orton Gillingham, Just Words, or Fundations as well as fluency and comprehension work. Staff/student ratio will be 1:1 to 1:3.
